CALGARY, AB, Sept. 14, 2026 /CNW/ -- As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes how Canadians learn, work, and innovate, MindFuel is helping young people move beyond simply using emerging technologies to applying them to real-world problems critically, responsibly, and creatively.

Through a national pathway connecting STEM learning, applied AI, prototyping, mentorship, and entrepreneurship, MindFuel supports young Canadians as they build the skills and confidence to turn ideas into tangible innovations. Programs such as the Tech Futures Challenge (TFC,) supported by MindFuel's Connect2Innovate digital platform, give youth opportunities to develop and test solutions addressing societal, environmental, and technological challenges.

Canada's future innovation capacity will depend on young people who understand not only what emerging technologies can do, but also their limitations. This includes learning to critically assess AI-generated information, recognize issues such as bias and hallucinations, make responsible decisions about how technology is used, and apply those tools as part of a broader innovation process.

MindFuel's approach connects foundational STEM and digital learning with increasingly applied experiences in problem-solving, prototyping, mentorship, and venture development.

Young Canadians Put Innovation into Action

The 2026 Tech Futures Challenge demonstrated what can happen when young people are given the tools, mentorship, and opportunity to tackle meaningful problems.

The national challenge brought together 33 projects from 27 teams across seven provinces, with participants developing prototype solutions spanning areas such as artificial intelligence, health technology, environmental sustainability, and advanced engineering.

Projects included:

  • Enzyme Optimization for Plastic Degradation: A student-led initiative exploring how large-scale biological sequence data, machine learning, and physical testing could be combined to identify and improve plastic-degrading enzymes for different environmental conditions.
  • Open RehAIb: A machine-learning and computer-vision project exploring how movement data could support rehabilitation assessment and recovery monitoring.
  • Wearable EEG and Neurotechnology: A project combining neuroscience, materials engineering, and machine learning to explore new approaches to wearable electroencephalogram technology for health and physiological monitoring.

These projects demonstrate a broader shift in how young people engage with technology: from consuming digital tools to using them as part of the process of investigating problems, testing ideas, and building potential solutions.

MindFuel also prioritizes opportunities for youth who remain underrepresented in STEM and innovation, including Indigenous youth, girls and young women, racialized youth, and students living in rural and remote communities.

Building Innovation Capacity Over Time

The Tech Futures Challenge is one part of a broader MindFuel innovation pathway designed to support young people at different stages of their development.

Early experiences such as Codingville and Genius Hours introduce coding, artificial intelligence, computational thinking and creative problem-solving. Applied AI experiences such as TypeShift help learners understand concepts including large language models, embeddings, prompt design, responsible AI, and the limitations of generative technologies.

As youth become ready to apply those skills, experiences such as the Tech Futures Challenge and other applied innovation opportunities provide mentorship, project development, and prototype-building experiences.

For emerging innovators seeking to advance beyond an early prototype, MindFuel is also developing deeper pathways into validation, entrepreneurship, workforce experiences, and venture development.

Underlying this journey is Connect2Innovate (C2I,) MindFuel's digital platform for connecting participants with learning experiences, mentors, opportunities, and next steps as their innovation readiness develops.

The goal is not simply to teach young Canadians how to use new technologies. It is to build their capacity to identify meaningful problems, explore possible solutions, test their assumptions, work collaboratively, and continue advancing promising ideas.

MindFuel's broader longitudinal research demonstrates the potential long-term impact of these experiences. Eighty-seven per cent of participating youth reported increased interest in innovation and entrepreneurship, while 95 per cent indicated that MindFuel experiences positively influenced their post-secondary or STEM-related career decisions.
